Cured-Mattress Factory Art Museum
This installation was created for the Detroit Exhibition at the Mattress Factory Art Museum in Pittsburgh, PA.
It was important for me to try to activate the space of this installation in order to create an experience. In my research, I discovered that large deposits of salt exists under the city of Detroit which extent as far as the city of Pittsburgh, creating a underground linkage. Using the salt as a medium, I used it to coat auto parts, then hung the parts, much like the curing process for meat. I liked the absurdity of using salt to cure auto parts especially since salt is so corrosive to metal. A futile attempt to preserve.
